Founded 25 years ago in Midhurst, West Sussex the charity Canine Partners today provides their assistance dogs programme all across the country. Their slogan 'Amazing Dogs - Transforming Lives' describes precisely what Canine Partners extraordinary vision encompasses.

Canine Partners 'recruit' young dogs that are trained by a team of specialist dog handlers to provide practical day to day assistance with tasks that primarily wheelchair-bound people would struggle to achieve by themselves without help. They also train the dogs' new owners (both called 'partners') on how to work together. The everyday tasks (from a very long list!) include:

  • Opening and closing doors and cupboards
  • Retrieving a variety of items
  • Helping get undressed
  • Pressing buttons and switches
  • Raising the alarm in an emergency
  • Unloading washing machines and tumble driers

GOLO were delighted to provide funding (October 2015) towards the residential training programme for a Godalming wheelchair user to be united with their new canine partner.

Godalming-based Go Perform is a recently formed group of performers who put on shows for community groups in the area with funds generated being donated to charity.

Their audiences will be primarily at nursing homes, residential care homes and local clubs and schools, as well as community groups such as WIs, day centres and PTAs.

GOLO has provided funding (November 2015) towards the group's set-up costs which include music scores and rehearsal costs.

Pictured with Go Perform members at rehearsal are GOLO volunteers Joy Poulter and Liz Wheatley and the group's co-ordinator Anne Gray.
