An exciting new voluntary group in Godalming set-up to provide classes run by experienced un-paid tutors teaching practical and creative skills in basic patchwork and quilting skills. Classes led by qualified teachers and members of the UK Quilters Guild target a local demographic that includes young mothers, new-comers to the area, the unemployed, part-time employed, retired and semi-retired people.

Skills are marketable within the area's burgeoning arts and creative movement and participation can later access vocational and further education courses within the field. It is the long-term aim of the tutors that the classes will, in time, grow and be self-sustaining and that a workable model can be replicated in other Surrey communities based on the Godalming model.

GOLO contributed (December 2015) towards the start-up costs of the group. Pictured at front (from left) are organisers Irina Ince and Alison Gisvold with GOLO volunteer (centre) Heather Pollard. Back row from left are Material Girls students Morris Mealing, Marie Norman, Maureen Fairhurst, Barbara Procter and Margaret Quire, with Di Clift of GOLO.

Tucked away in Crown Court in the centre of Godalming is The Cellar Cafe, which provides a safe and relaxing environment for customers to have time and space to share any problems or difficulties with staff and volunteers. The Cellar staff are especially alert to the needs of the poor, and mentally ill, the marginalised, and those suffering from special needs or handicap, and offering pastoral support as deemed appropriate.

Every year The Cellar provides Christmas presents and Christmas food for about 50 needy individuals and families in the Godalming area.

GOLO is proud to support their Christmas initiative again this year. Pictured is The Cellar manager Jacky Beale (front row, second from left) with GOLO's Heather Pollard, together with trustees, staff, customers and GOLO volunteers.
